Some Thoughts About Me --

A Professional Perspective

Hello -- welcome to my Career and Resume Pages ... where you can learn about me from a professional perspective ...

On past life's halfway point, I've had great fortune to have worked in wonderfully diverse and interesting aspects of accounting and finance;  business planning and systems analysis; marketing,  public relations and media programs; advocacy and technical writing; design and creative direction; and entrepreneurial management.  Both college research and hands-on experience has been intertwined throughout this broad and diverse career background.

I'm especially fond to mention that, smack-dab in the middle of this multifaceted career, I opened a brewery-restaurant in 1993.

Still successful and profitable, the Brown & Moran brewpub  began modestly as a business plan I wrote in the Fall 1988 as an MBA school project at the University of Pittsburgh.  Ernest and energetic commitment and assumption of all business management functions of this $2 million business made it happen, nearly five years later.  My role and accomplishments included:

   Concept marketing / menu,
      advertising and sales
      promotion

   Building layout / plant
      architectural design and
      ergonomics

   Human resources

   Accounting and finance

   Project presentation before
      numerous government,
      finance and other stake-
      holders ... and many other
      planning and operating
      responsibilities and tasks.

The brewpub, with a full service restaurant associated with a tiny but showy beer plant -- was hand installed by partners and myself during  a strenuous 2 1/2-year renovation of an old but sturdy 1854 Hudson River brick warehouse.  The business is now more than 15 years old.

Throughout this nearly eight-year entrepreneurial experience -- indeed,  throughout my entire career -- I've produced, written and directed a wide range of business projects, undertaken with great confidence and enthusiasm, drawing from nearly eight years total of college study done both full time and at nights.

Besides brewing and running a restaurant, I've worked in a broad set of industries, including: Power Systems (Gas / Steam Turbine Generator Systems, Cogeneration); Plastics and Chemicals; Consumer / Contractor / Architect Building, Roofing and Insulation Products, Industrial Coatings and Construction Materials; Telephony and Switching Systems; Aircraft Components and Maintenance businesses; and Enterprise Accounting Systems.

Work experience has also included assignments in marketing and sales promotion program development; consumer and trade media relations programs, material creation and spokesperson role; investor relations and annual report production; human resource communications and newsletter / tabloid content creation, video news material and journalism writing; and business planning and financial analysis.

All throughout this work it became inevitable I'd become intimately engaged with new computer and other technologies, from typesetting, and word processing and pagination of the early 1980s;  then operating system technology / implementation and networking; ERP business analysis and systems design; and most recently web authoring and web site implementation, on-line learning programs, database management, connectivity and platform / security.

Regarding my college studies, I earned a bachelors degree from West Virginia University School of Journalism, Morgantown, WV; an M.B.A. that began at the University of Pittsburgh and was finished at Union College, Schenectady, NY; and full course requirements for an Information Technology and an M.S. Accounting from the University at Albany, Albany, NY.  The Resume and Career Matrix pages that following discussed my education and qualifications further.

Besides being a traveler -- as the bulk of this site's content will attest -- I'm an avid reader and IT enthusiast a long-distance runner, skier and mountaineer, traveler and writer; I create travel writing and photo graphics for fun and, someday, for profit ... and writing has always been a core love -- it is the wondrous recollection of life's experiences that I enjoy most and feel I have to offer others.

You'll find a great deal of my writing here at my site, of course.  But much of my writing background has been in a professional, technical / industrial setting.  I fill much of my "extracurricular" time reading newspapers and magazines and an eclectic assortment of very hefty  computer books.  Though I love the city, I'm very much an outdoor person -- and, in fact, I lug those big books along for reading on long hikes up mountains!

Well, that's enough for now -- thanks for your interest.  Again, following this page is my resume ... click the pesky little spinning "e" and send me an e-mail!
